Road Trip Part II: Lancaster, Pennsylvania

If you’re following along on our recent road trip…

This time, it’s Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  Though we took several day-trips during our stay in Pennsylvania (more on those later), the bulk of our time was spent in Lancaster, where Erik’s parents live and the family reunion was held.  We don’t see his parents often, so it was good to spend time with them.  The reunion was a fantastic time of reminiscing with family Erik hadn’t seen in years, and for me it was nice to finally put faces to some of the names/stories I’d heard about for so long!

Our first morning in Lancaster we enjoyed breakfast at On Orange, a cozy eatery located on Orange Street in downtown Lancaster that offers a small selection of vegan options.

I ordered the Swedish pancakes, and Erik ordered the Swedish waffles.  Both are made with organic oats and served with applesauce and Earth Balance.  We also each added a side of their vegan sausage.  The servings were huge–we should have shared! On Orange - Lancaster, Pennsylvania Oh my word was it good!  The pancakes and waffles were so fluffy and moist, and we loved eating them with the applesauce spread on top.  The soy-based sausage was good as well and had a nice herb blend.  We were so impressed that we all went back a week later for breakfast before starting the trek back home.

If you’re in the Lancaster area, stop in for a bite.  Everyone was warm and welcoming, and I think you’d enjoy the food.  On Orange is located at 108 W. Orange Street, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Our favorite meal in Lancaster may have been on our last night there–we braved the heat and stepped outside to grill veggie kabobs, potatoes, tomatoes and corn on the cob.

Grilled Veggies Can a summer meal get any more perfect than this?

Looking back, it was a magical night as we kicked back in the sunshine and shared good food, laughter, stories and pictures from the previous week.  There couldn’t have been a better way to end our time together!

Grilling with Family Next stop:  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!

I have an aunt that lives in Lancaster. I will have to make sure she knows about this place! Also, I agree that IS the best summer meal!

It looks like you had such a fun trip! I look forward to hearing more, especially since I’ve heard great things about the vegan options in Philadelphia. Grilling is definitely one of the best parts of summer. That smoky, grilled flavor makes everything taste better.

I love that about traveling – trying new places to eat. Spending time with family? That’s even better! Glad you had a great trip!

I enjoyed reading about your road trip (favorite activity: road trip, second favorite: reading vicariously about others’ road trips). I wouldn’t have expected to find something in Lancaster to eat. Good to know.

Aw, thanks, Jenny! I know that we can find something to eat just about anywhere, but I was thrilled when we found a place that actually called out vegan items on their menu — and a breakfast menu, no less! The times, they are a-changin’ :)
